What is Estrogen Anyway? What is it Doing to Me??
Women of all ages and stages of life have been asking these questions about estrogen for years! We know that it is a hormone and that it is generally blamed for all of those pesky symptoms we experience throughout puberty. We also know that hormone levels rise during pregnancy and that they fall toward the end of our reproductive years. During those "child bearing" years, hormone levels fluctuate, affecting our bodies, our hearts and our minds in dimensions that are unimaginable!
And so, the burning question remains:
How can one molecule impact our lives in so many different ways?
The truth is that we are still learning about estrogen's actions. We do know what it does and how it does it, and we have observed the consequences of having too much or not enough, but our knowledge is far from complete, and the list of questions continues to grow:
- What happens to my hormone levels during menopause, or
more importantly during perimenopause, the years leading up to
it?
- Should I replace hormones as my body's production of them
begins to slow?
- Why is there so much variability among women?
- Are "natural" over-the-counter products safer than
hormones prescribed by my doctor?
- How do I tell the difference between hormone-related
changes and the effects of normal aging?
Research is beginning to give us these answers, but it is a slow process. For the sake of our daughters and granddaughters, it is important for these studies to continue. For those of us who need answers NOW, a little creativity is in order! Sharing experiences and resources will enable us all to participate in the process of finding solutions to our womens health concerns.
